In front of an invited audience made up of representatives from upland organisations, interest groups, and government and public bodies, and after 18 months of data analysis, research and writing, the first all-island demographic and socio-economic research report received its official launch this week.
Authored by Dr Brendan O’Keeffe and Dr Caroline Crowley, the publication titled ‘A Profile of Ireland’s Uplands: An All-Island Study Highlighting their Strategic Importance’, provides an extensive status report and identifies many of the issues and challenges faced by upland communities. It also highlights the importance of uplands as a mosaic of natural habitats, high nature value farmland, archaeological and cultural heritage, a proven carbon store and provider of vital clean water.
Officially launched by Virginia Teehan, the CEO of The Heritage Council, the afternoon event held in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, saw an informative visual presentation given by Dr. Brendan O’Keeffe and presentations given by Frank Nugent and Dr Mary Tubridy, the Chair and Research Director of the Irish Uplands Forum.
Commissioned by the Irish Uplands Forum, with financial assistance from the Heritage Council, the profile represents a significant body of work which will contribute to the decision-making on a broad range of upland related considerations. It also offers for the first time, a baseline of data that can be referenced for future studies and forms the important first stage of a longitudinal study.
